At a media briefing prior to the release of Gemini 2.0, Bibo Xu, a product manager on Google's DeepMind team, revealed, "A small group of people will test Project Astra through prototype glasses, which we think is one of the most powerful and intuitive ways to experience this kind of AI.." This portion of the testers will be affiliated with Google's Trusted Tester program, which typically has access to these early prototypes, many of which don't end up being released publicly. Some of the testers will reportedly use Astra through their Android phones, while others will experience it through glasses.

During the Q&A session that followed, in response to a question about eyeglasses, Xu said "We'll be posting more about the eyewear product itself soon!." This doesn't mean though that GoogleSmart glassesComing soon, but it certainly shows that Google has something planned for the hardware side of Project Astra.

For what Google hopes to achieve with Astra.Smart glasses are excellent vehiclesThere's no better way to combine audio, video, and display than with a device worn on the face -- especially when the goal is to achieve a "constant companion assistant" like experience.
