It was released alongside its larger model of the same family, Phi-4. With these new APIs, web developers can add prompt word input boxes to their apps and provide writing aids such as text generation, summarization, and editing. Microsoft says it will also release a text translation API in the coming months.

Notably, these APIs will not only support Windows, but will also be compatible with the Edge browser on macOS. In addition, Microsoft defines these APIs as "experimental" Web standards and says they are not only for Phi-4-mini models, but also compatible with other AI models.

Developers can now try out these APIs in the Edge Canary and Dev channel to get a sneak peek at their potential for web app development.

Meanwhile, Google has provided a similar API in its Chrome browser, enabling developers to utilize Chrome's built-in model to provide features such as text translation, text- and image-generated cue word input boxes, and the creation of calendar events based on web content.

May 20, 2012 - At Microsoft's Build 2025 conference today, Microsoft announced a major update: Web developers will soon be able to utilize device-side artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the Edge browser.
