According to Bloomberg, the U.S. Office of Management and Budget issued a directive today (local time) requiring federal agencies to monitor, evaluate and test the impact of artificial intelligence on the public.Mitigating the risks of algorithmic discrimination and privacy violations,<\/span>and increase transparency in the government\u2019s use of AI technology<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Agencies must also establish AI governance committees and set up \u201cChief Artificial Intelligence Officer<\/a>The position of Chief AI Officer (CAIO) will be responsible for coordinating the use of AI across government departments, while also conducting risk assessments and setting operational and governance indicators. Agencies must also submit annual reports to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).List all AI systems it uses, any risks associated with them, and how it plans to mitigate those risks<\/span>.<\/p>\n

White House<\/a>The agency said that \u201cagencies using AI in ways that could impact the rights or safety of Americans will be required to implement specific safeguards by December 1,\u201d including detailed public disclosures so the public knows how and when the government is using AI.<\/p>\n

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris told reporters that the CAIO candidate needs to have the experience, expertise and authority to oversee all artificial intelligence technologies used by agencies.The move is to ensure AI is used responsibly<\/span>.<\/p>\n
