UNDP: AI is the New Dawn of Global Development, China Leads the AI Circuit

May 6 News.United NationsThe Human Development Report 2025 - A Time for Choice: Humanity and Possibility in the Age of Artificial Intelligence report, released today (May 6) by UNDP.It was pointed out that the process of human development was experiencing an unprecedented slowdown, while artificial intelligence was expected to inject new momentum into development.

UNDP: AI is the New Dawn of Global Development, China Leads the AI Circuit

Note: The report uses the Human Development Index, which combines dimensions such as health, education and income levels, to assess the global development process. The data suggests that HDI growth will stagnate in all regions of the world in 2024.

A new survey included in the report shows that the public is both rationally cognizant and positively expectant of the changes brought about by AI.

Half of the world's respondents believe their jobs could be replaced by automation. AndA larger proportion (6 in 10) expect AI to have a positive impact on employmentand create new career opportunities that do not exist today.

Only 13% of respondents were concerned that AI would lead to job loss.In contrast, in countries with low to medium levels of human development, 70% of the population expects AI to improve productivity, and two-thirds plan to apply AI tools to education, healthcare, or the workplace within the next year.

The report notes thatChina takes center stage in research, robotics and data ecosystemsIt recognized China's global leadership in AI research, with particular excellence in robotics and computer vision.

China Makes Major Breakthrough in Retaining Top Artificial Intelligence Talent --47% of overseas-trained Chinese AI talent choose to return to China in 2023, realizing a significant increase in the ratio from 29% in 2019.

Unlike the U.S., which focuses on natural language processing and AI safety, China's AI development focuses more on industrial applications (e.g., robotics), creating a differentiated development path.

UNDP Administrator Steiner said:

Over the past decades, the world had been on track to achieve a very high level of human development by 2030, but the current deceleration in development poses a real threat to global progress.

At a time when artificial intelligence is rapidly penetrating all aspects of human life, we should value its potential for development. New capabilities are emerging almost every day, and while AI is not a panacea, the choices we make will likely rekindle the fire of human development and open up new paths and possibilities.
