Note: This feature was previously limited to paid subscribers such as ChatGPT Plus and Pro, and according to the official support documentation, theBeginning June 3, 2025, this feature begins to be progressively available to logged-in free users.
ChatGPT not only remembers the user's previous specific instructions (e.g., no dashes), but also automatically references them in new conversations to ensure that responses are more relevant and consistent.
While free subscribers can also experience the memory feature, OpenAI emphasizes that it is a lightweight version that only supports the continuity of short conversations. In contrast, users who subscribe to ChatGPT Plus ($20 per month) or ChatGPT Pro ($200 per month) will gain access to a more robust memory capability that allows them to refer to conversations recorded further back in time.
Additionally, if you are concerned about privacy, you can turn off the "Memory" or "Quote Chat History" feature in the settings at any time, or even delete specific memories. ChatGPT also offers a "Temporary Chat" mode, which is similar to a browser's incognito mode, ensuring that conversations are not saved.
