In their place, Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and some of the R&D staff, and will all be joined byGoogle DeepMind team.
Unlike an acquisition, Google will not have any control or equity in Windsurf, but will have a non-exclusive license to some of Windsurf's technology.
Google did not disclose the cost of the deal, though it was previously reported that OpenAI was looking to acquire Windsurf for $3 billion (note: current exchange rate is about Rs. 21.52 billion).
Google said Mohan and Windsurf employees will focus on coding intelligences for Google DeepMind and work on the Gemini project.
Effective immediately, Jeff Wang, head of Windsurf's business, becomes the company's interim CEO, and Graham Moreno, vice president of global sales, becomes the new president.
Google spokesperson Chris Pappas said, "Gemini is one of the best models available today, and we've been investing in its advanced capabilities for developers. We're excited to welcome some of the top AI coding talent from the Windsurf team to Google DeepMind to advance our work in AI coding."
