Located in San Francisco OpenAI Artificial Intelligence CompaniesThe company's office security measures have caused uneasiness among surrounding businesses. According to the San Francisco Standard, the company's office is full of plainclothes security guards who remain silent about questions from neighbors, and this mysterious atmosphere has made surrounding businesses feel uneasy.
Photographers for the San Francisco Standard recently noticed suspicious individuals standing guard outside the OpenAI office building, wearing black baseball caps, sunglasses, and concealed headphones, looking like plainclothes security guards.
Candace Combs, owner of the nearby In-Symmetry Spa, said:She had asked these suspicious people about their workplaces and companies, but they all refused to disclose any information.
OpenAI first moved into its new 59,000-square-foot office in San Francisco's Mission District in July 2023. According to planning documents, the office building has a typical Silicon Valley tech company style, including nap rooms, mini kitchens, sun lounges, and a multimillion-dollar double-story library.
Since moving to the new address, OpenAI has kept its office information strictly confidential, refused to receive reporters from the media, and never confirmed or denied its office location.
Iain Langlands, a cashier at a pet store just a block away from OpenAI, said there was an aura of "mystery" around the OpenAI office. "Every time I passed by the building or parked my car, their security guards would stare at me," Langlands said.
James, a worker at Health Ceramics, another neighboring business, said he had asked some suspicious people if they were working as security guards, but they "never admitted it." "OpenAI is not a bad neighbor, but they are indeed very mysterious," James said.
Unarmed guards don’t have to wear uniforms or badges, but they must be employed by a security firm, a legitimate business or a public agency, and they must show their license information to law enforcement officers, according to the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, which licenses guards in California.
