The release marks a significant step toward making OpenAI's API platform more practical and relevant for real-world applications.
A brief overview of the new developer tools in this release:
Responses API:
The API combines chat functionality with integrated tools (such as web search and file search) based on the ChatGPT search model to provide real-time information with cited sources, providing developers with a more flexible development base.
OpenAI plans to phase out the Assistants API by 2026 in favor of a new Responses API, described as a superset of the existing chat functionality that retains all of the original functionality and adds multi-tool support.
Agents SDK:
An open source framework for orchestrating complex workflows involving multiple intelligences. Derived from its experimental project Swarm, the SDK features intelligent handoffs, security fences, and comprehensive debugging trails. The SDK supports efficient retrieval of information from large amounts of documentation, with new metadata filtering and direct search endpoint access.
Computer Use Tool (CUT):
The Operator feature enables AI to perform tasks directly on the computer.
Kevin Weil, Head of Product at OpenAI, said at the launch, "2025 will be the year of the AI Intelligence Body. It's the year that ChatGPT and our developer tools will shift from just answering questions to performing tasks for users in the real world."
