According to 1AI, the Google AI Edge Gallery provides users with the ability to find, download and run compatible models that can generate images, answer questions, write and edit code and more. Typically, AI models running in the cloud outperform locally run models, but there are some drawbacks to cloud models. Some users may be concerned about sending personal or sensitive data to a remote data center, or may want to be able to use AI models without a Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
Google describes the app as an "experimental alpha version" that can be downloaded via GitHub. The app's main interface shows shortcuts to AI tasks and functions such as Ask Image and AI Chat. When clicking on a function, users can see a list of models suitable for that task, such as Google's Gemma 3n model.
The Google AI Edge Gallery also provides a "Prompt Lab" that allows users to launch model-driven "single-round" tasks, such as summarizing and rewriting text, with a variety of templates and configurable settings to fine-tune the model's behavior as needed.
