July 9, 2011 - According toJapanJapan is significantly lagging behind the world's leading countries in terms of generative artificial intelligence (AI) usage, according to a 2025 white paper released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on Tuesday. The whitepaper noted that only 26.7% of the Japanese population reported using such tools in fiscal year 2024, which, despite being about a threefold increase from fiscal year 2023, is still well below AI-leading countries such as the U.S. and China. Among them.In the United States, the utilization rate is as high as 68.81 TP3T, while in China, the utilization rate is even higher at 81.21 TP3T.

1AI notes that the white paper emphasizes that AI is a central pillar of the future digital society, and calls on all sectors in Japan to step up their efforts to promote its widespread application in various industries and daily life.
In terms of age distribution, Japan's younger generation is interested inGenerative AI The acceptance is higher, especially among the 20-somethings, with a usage rate of 44.7%, who mainly use the technology in scenarios such as search, content summarization and translation.
However, many of those who do not use generative AI say they do not see the technology as necessary in their daily lives or work, or are not sure how to use it.
Globally, there is growing competition in generative AI, especially based on the development of large-scale language models that understand context and generate natural responses. Currently, competition in this space is dominated by large U.S. tech companies and Chinese startups.
Nonetheless, the white paper also notes that Japan is making progress in this area as well, with a number of smaller but powerful models being developed.
