August 9, 2011 - Technology outlet Windows Central published a blog post today (Aug. 9) reporting that Tesla CEO ElonMuskslateMicrosoftand OpenAI the multi-billion dollar partnership.It says it has betrayed OpenAI's non-profit roots and has become a "de facto subsidiary" of Microsoft.
In the lawsuits, Musk emphasized that OpenAI, which originally promised to develop general artificial intelligence (AGI) for the benefit of all humanity, is now pursuing profit maximization under Microsoft's leadership. Musk sees this shift as a "fundamental betrayal" and has filed two lawsuits in response, the second of which accuses OpenAI of "racketeering".
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella welcomed the GPT-5 model release in a tweet to which Musk replied, "OpenAI is killing Microsoft.”.
Despite Musk's strong words, Microsoft and OpenAI executives were lukewarm. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella responded to the GPT-5 release with a tongue-in-cheek comment that "people have been trying for 50 years, and that's the fun of it," and touted the fact that his platform will support Musk's xAI's Grok model.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, on the other hand, has publicly stated that he "doesn't pay much attention to Musk," saying that he "tweets and criticizes us all day long." The media outlet believes this lighthearted response reflects a strained relationship between the two parties and that OpenAI is no longer under Musk's influence.
