xAI's model, called Grok Code Fast 1, will be available for free for a limited time on all major intelligent programming platforms, including Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Cline, opencode, Windsurf, Roo Code, and Kilo Code.
The model is described as being built from scratch using a new architecture, with a pre-training corpus that contains rich programming content and is optimized post-training on a dataset that reflects real-world coding tasks.
Grok Code Fast 1 specializes in TypeScript, Python, Java, Rust, C++, and Go languages, and is capable of handling a wide range of programming tasks from building new projects to fixing bugs with minimal supervision.
The model is priced at $0.20 per million input tokens (note: the current exchange rate is about RMB 1.4), $1.50 per million output tokens (the current exchange rate is about RMB 10.7)1.50, and $0.02 per million cached input tokens (the current exchange rate is about RMB 0.14), which makes it an affordable option for developers.
According to xAI, the model's "core strength is strong performance in an affordable, lean architecture, making it a flexible choice for fast, low-cost processing of common coding tasks."
At present, OpenAI, Microsoft and other AI enterprises are focusing on promoting the popularization of AI code assistant users.
In May, Microsoft introduced the GitHub Copilot feature, a code generation tool, at its annual Build developer conference. The company's CEO, Satya Nadella, revealed in April that Microsoft's code for 20% to 30% is now written and generated by AI.
Codex, the code generation tool from ChatGPT developer OpenAI, was made available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers in June.
In addition, xAI filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI in U.S. federal court in Texas on Monday, alleging that the two companies unlawfully conspired to stifle competition in the AI space.
