According to Bloomberg, the world's No. 2 maker of memory chips -- theSK Hynixsaid it plans to spend $3.87 billion (currently about Rs. 28,058 million) to build a state-of-the-art packaging plant and artificial intelligence product research center in Indiana.
SK Hynix plans to build its first plant in West Lafayette, La.Mass production is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2028.. The plant will focus on building a production line for next-generation, high-bandwidth memory chips, which are key components for training graphics processors for artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
SK Hynix has emerged as a key player in the AI boom as the primary designer and producer of HBM chips, which work in tandem with processors from NVIDIA Corp. The decision to build a plant there comes about two years after SK Hynix announced plans to invest in the U.S. SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won said at the time that the company would set aside about $15 billion (currently about CNY108.75 billion) to build chip facilities and enhance research programs in the U.S., the report said.
According to SK Hynix, this announcement is part of the "total commitment" mentioned above.

The Wall Street Journal released almost identical news in late March that SK Hynix was planning to invest about $4 billion to build an advanced chip packaging plant in West Lafayette, Indiana, with production scheduled to begin in 2028. In response, SK Hynix said in a statement thatThe company is reviewing its plans to invest in advanced chip packaging in the U.S., but has not yet made a decision.
People familiar with the matter had told the Wall Street Journal that SK Hynix's board of directors is expected to approve the decision soon, a move that will boost the U.S. government's ambition to restore the U.S. to its status as a semiconductor powerhouse, and which is expected to create about 800 to 1,000 new jobs.
