ON MARCH 11, THE NEWS CAME OUT YESTERDAY, WHEN YOUNG WEIDA PUBLISHED A SIGNED ARTICLE BY CEO WONG IN-HOON PROPOSING AN AI "FIVE LAYERS OF CAKE" ARCHITECTURE MODEL AND CLEARLY CHARACTERIZING AI AS A MODERN INFRASTRUCTURE OF EQUAL IMPORTANCE TO ELECTRICITY. IN HIS ARTICLE, WONG IN-HOON NOTED THAT COMPUTING TECHNOLOGY WAS SHIFTING FROM TRADITIONAL PREFABRICATED SOFTWARE TO REAL-TIME-GENERATED INTELLIGENCE AND THAT THE EVOLUTION OF THIS BOTTOM LOGIC REQUIRED A COMPLETE RE-ENGINEERING OF THE ENTIRE COMPUTING ARCHITECTURE. HE DECOMPOSED THE AI ARCHITECTURE FROM THE BOTTOM UP TO FIVE LEVELS: ENERGY, CHIPS, INFRASTRUCTURE, MODELS AND APPLICATIONS. IT EMPHASIZES THAT ENERGY IS THE PRIMARY CONSTRAINT ON THE SCALE OF OUTPUT OF SMART SYSTEMS..

April 2, 2011 - Elon Musk has said that his artificial intelligence startup xAI will build the world's largest supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee. Documents seen by Business Insider show that the company is investing hundreds of millions of dollars in the project, but faces a large power deficit. Since the project was first announced in June 2024, xAI has submitted 14 applications for building permits to the Memphis Planning and Development Agency, with a total estimated cost of $405.9 million ($2.9...)

The United States is witnessing a boom in the construction of natural gas-fired power plants as big tech companies turn to fossil fuels to meet the huge demand for electricity brought about by the artificial intelligence revolution, a trend that could jeopardize the achievement of climate goals, the Financial Times reported on January 13th. 1AI notes that energy consulting firm Enverus says the U.S. will build as many as 80 new natural gas-fired power plants by 2030, adding 46 gigawatts of new installed capacity, equivalent to the size of Norway's entire power system and nearly 20% more capacity than has been added in the past five years. Energy research firm Wood Macke...

According to a new study backed by the U.S. Department of Energy, power demand for U.S. data centers is expected to nearly triple over the next three years and could account for 12% of the nation's electricity consumption, a phenomenon caused by the transition of industries to artificial intelligence, Reuters reported on December 21st. The report was written by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. According to the projections, data centers could use between 74 and 132 gigawatts of electricity annually by 2028, accounting for between 6.7% and 12% of the total electricity consumption in the U.S. The range of this figure depends in part on the AI chip...

December 19, 2011 - With the public release of iOS 18.2 and many new features of Apple Intelligence coming online, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) has warned that the explosion of artificial intelligence (AI) applications could put the U.S. and Canada at risk of widespread power outages as early as next year. According to the Financial Times, NERC, a non-profit regulator of the North American power industry, has expressed concern about the surge in data center electricity use brought on by AI services such as ChatGPT and Apple's private cloud-based computing servers...
