SURVEY IN JAPAN: OVER 10 PERCENT OF CARTOONISTS AND ILLUSTRATORS DECLINE IN INCOME DUE TO GENERATION OF AI
ON JANUARY 26, ACCORDING TO THE JAPAN TIMES, A LARGE-SCALE SURVEY RECENTLY RELEASED BY THE JAPAN FREELANCE UNION REVEALED THAT, OVER THE PAST YEAR, OVER ONE TENTH OF JAPANESE CARTOONISTS, ILLUSTRATORS AND OTHER CREATIVE PRACTITIONERS HAD EXPERIENCED VARYING DEGREES OF INCOME DECLINE DUE TO THE SPREAD OF GENERATING AI, AND THAT INDUSTRY'S DEMAND FOR REGULATORY AND COPYRIGHT TRANSPARENCY HAD INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY. THE SURVEY WAS LAUNCHED IN OCTOBER LAST YEAR AND A TOTAL OF 24991 VALID QUESTIONNAIRES WERE RECOVERED, OF WHICH 54.2% WAS FOR ILLUSTRATORS AND 15% FOR CARTOONISTS.
