May 2 News.GoogleThe company published a blog post yesterday, May 1, thatAnnouncing the gradual rollout of specialized features for Google Search AI Mode tab, a handful of U.S. users have been invited to test the experience, with plans to expand the test in the coming weeks.
Note: AI Mode is available as a standalone option for Google Search, alongside the existing News, Images and Shopping tabs, providing users with AI-generated answers directly in the search interface. The feature has previously been running in a test environment at Google Labs, with the core technology relying on Google's latest AI model, Gemini 2.0.
The new AI Mode has enhanced reasoning and multimodal processing capabilities to handle complex user questions. Users can ask any question, get an AI-driven smart response, and dive deeper with follow-up questions and web links.AI Mode automatically organizes the information to provide a concise and easy-to-understand breakdown of the content, dramatically reducing the burden of searching on the user.
Similar to the AI summaries in Google's regular search, AI Mode eschews traditional search results altogether, presenting only AI answers pulled from data across multiple sites and networks.
Additionally, Google has added visual location and product cards to AI Mode that users can click on for more information. For example, cards for restaurants, salons, and stores will display useful data such as ratings, reviews, hours of operation, and inventory. Meanwhile, a new dedicated panel on the left side of the interface records AI search history, making it easy for users to go back and ask follow-up questions.
