TechCrunch (May 29) published a blog post reporting that the AI development platform Hugging Face Newly Launched HopeJR and Reachy Mini two modelsOpen SourceHumanoid Robot, a further foray into robotics.

Hugging Face Launches HopeJR and Reachy Mini, Open Source Humanoid Robots

HopeJR is a full-size robot with 66 degrees of freedom, capable of walking, waving its arms, and many other complex movements.

Reachy Mini, on the other hand, is a smaller desktop robot with head turning, voice interaction and listening capabilities, making it especially suitable for developers testing AI applications.

The first batch of robots is expected to start shipping by the end of this year, and the pre-order list is currently open, but the exact timeline has not yet been determined, according to Clem Delangue, the company's co-founder and CEO.

Price-wise, Hugging Face is committed to making robotics more accessible; the HopeJR is expected to sell for $3,000 each, while the Reachy Mini is priced between $250 and $300.

Delangue emphasized that both robots are open-source designs that can be assembled, modified, or studied by anyone to see how they work. He said, "Open source and low cost are crucial, and we want to avoid the robotics field being dominated by a few big companies and their dangerous black box systems."

Additionally, the launch was made possible by the company's acquisition of humanoid robotics startup Pollen Robotics in April of this year, whose team provided key technical support for Hugging Face.

Hugging Face has continued to increase its investment in the robotics industry in recent years, 1AI cites a blog post. The company launched its LeRobot platform in 2024, which integrates open-source AI models, datasets, and tools to help build robotic systems.

Moving into 2025, the company has further updated its SO-101, a 3D-printed programmable robotic arm developed in partnership with French robotics company The Robot Studio, and expanded the LeRobot platform's training data with the addition of training for self-driving devices through a partnership with AI startup Yaak.
