July 12OpenAI CEO Sam Altman The posting announced that the company had planned to release its first open-source rights-based model this week, but that the release will now be delayed and that a new release date cannot be determined.

Altman explained that the team needs more time to do additional security testing and review high-risk areas, and is working super hard to do so. Its stated that while it believes that users can build great things with the new model, once it's released it can't be taken back, "and the new model is new to us and we want to do it right."
According to The Verge, OpenAI is preparing to release an "open weighting model" at the o3 mini level, which is expected to be called the "Open Model," but this term is easily confused with the traditional "open source," and the degree of openness will still depend on whether or not it publishes the full code, training details, and licenses.
