Yesterday afternoon, the American Computer Society (ACM) announced that Andrew Barto and Richard Sutton were awarded the 2024 ACM A.M. Turing Award for their conceptual and algorithmic foundations in the field of reinforcement learning. Since the 1980s, Barto and Sutton have presented the core ideas of reinforcement learning in a series of papers, constructed its mathematical foundations, and developed key algorithms that have made it one of the most important approaches in the study of intelligent systems. It is worth mentioning that Richard Sutton, who is known as the "Father of Reinforcement Learning", was Barto's Ph.D. and postdoctoral student, and the collaboration between the two students and faculty members has been a cornerstone of this field.
