As Tesla is about to begin trials of a self-driving cab (Robotaxi), the company's former head of AI, Andrej Karpathy, has warned against believing that the self-driving problem has been solved or that a fully self-driving car will be a reality anytime soon, according to electric car website Electrek. Karpathy recalled an experience in 2013. Karpathy noted that 12 years later, the problem of self-driving has still not been solved. "We got in the self-driving car and drove along the highways, streets, etc. around Palo Alto for about 30 minutes, and it was a perfect ride. There was no intervention the whole time. This was in 2013, about 12 years ago. And it struck a chord with me because I had a perfect driving experience, a perfect demonstration of autonomous driving, and I thought that autonomous driving was going to happen because it was all going to work. It was incredible. But now, 12 years later, we're still working on self-driving technology. We're still working on the driving (AI) intelligence. Even now, we still haven't really solved the problem."
