The team is led by James LePage, head of AI at Automattic (note: the parent company of WordPress), and also includes Felix Arntz and Pascal Birchler from Google, as well as Jeff Paul, director of open-source projects at web design firm 10up.
As one of the world's most dominant website building platforms, WordPress' open source community has long had developers experimenting with AI tools. The formation of this dedicated team shows that WordPress is looking toMore systematic promotion and coordination of AI development in the community.
In a blog post, WordPress Executive Director Mary Hubbard said, "Having a unified team leading AI R&D helps reduce fragmentation and ensures that the direction of development is aligned with WordPress' long-term goals."
Currently, WordPress 660 AI plugins have been launched in the developer communityPopular plugins include AI website template builders, AI search engine optimization tools, and chatbots.
